No, I don't know. I'm sorry you're having these problems. It sounds like you got it working with a work around.
BTW, I like Mint 17 much better than I like 20. Lots of little features seem to be gone and the way it runs brings Windows to mind which is not a good thing!
Yeah, I can't help with that. Maybe if you tried a different desktop environment, but I don't recommend it.
