Trying to salvage your data from inside your decaying system is probably a mistake. The fastest, easiest thing to do here is to get a livecd distribution that handles cd & dvd burning, mount the hard drive and burn a DVD of everything under /home. Download a copy of knoppix and use k3b. In this modern age of full-featured boot-from-CD linux distributions, trying to solve problems from inside a broken machine is a waste of time. -- "It doesn't take talent to hustle." - H.
