mutt *is* a 21st century client (1995-2006), and is continually under development. Some of us simply don't *want* a GUI mail client. We actually prefer seeing only text in a text console, using our editor of choice to edit messages, and leaving other tasks (spam filtering, tasklist/calendar, contacts) to their own specialised applications.
As another person who reads my mail through a non-gui app (pine for me) let me point out that we are not disadvantaged when it comes to graphics. Pine and other text based mail user agents will start an external application to display graphics if they detect they are running on an X display.
However, I certainly endorse GUI clients for those who just want to get online and go. In particular, I found "balsa" to be good for Eudora converts, since it follows a very similar UI design.
IMHO the approach I use gets through a large volume of mail very quickly. Gui apps tend to be slower.
