I think you can install grub (boot manager) on the built in hard drive
and then use it to choose to boot windows or Linux on the external drive.
You might try asking at ubuntuforums.com
The refind (I think that is the name) boot manager might do it if grub
doesn't.
I think the live Ubuntu installs the uefi version if it's booted that
way.
It is not obvious (I *think* the command "systemd-analyze time" will
return the uefi firmware boot time if it is in uefi boot mode).

The more I think about it the more I believe that booting ubuntu from an
external hard drive may be the best alternative.
I think it would mean changing the BIOS to put the drive first in boot
up priority and re-booting the Lenovo, either with the HD connected or
not, every time I wanted to change OS's. Much prefer to be able to
"choose" which OS on boot up but hardly a reason to do more than
grumble ...
If someone can confirm that would be appreciated ...
Then I need a bootable ubuntu on the ext HD. I'd hope that's as simple
as a ubuntu download on to the ext HD.
Again if someone could please confirm ...
Given those confirmations ... all I need then is a new ext HD!
Thanks in anticipation of your help.

But isn't OP confused about why dual boot is not installing?
Perhaps someone could do phone help -- I'm too far away unfortunately.

Just give up on dual boot - there are 2 other options on the table
that will be fine
