I think you can install grub (boot manager) on the built in hard drive and
then use it to choose to boot windows or Linux on the external drive.
You might try asking at ubuntuforums.com
The refind (I think that is the name) boot manager might do it if grub doesn't.
I think the live Ubuntu installs the uefi version if it's booted that way.
It is not obvious (I *think* the command "systemd-analyze time" will return
the uefi firmware boot time if it is in uefi boot mode).

Then I need a bootable ubuntu on the ext HD. I'd hope that's as simple
as a ubuntu download on to the ext HD.
