Since I wrote this, I've been informed that MSSes are now set
automatically based on the MTU of the connection.

I have to assume this is a somewhat recent development, because I
recall MSS rules being required and having a positive effect once upon
a time -- but I began applying them in 1998ish and have continued to
do so ever since, so I never noticed this.

Anyway, except for academic purposes, ignore everything I wrote and
just set yourself a lower MTU. :)
