There is no mechanical difference of which I am aware.

Plug your device in and do something like "lsusb" or "lshw" to figure
out into which bus your device was plugged.


When I got my new machine a number of years ago, I discovered that the
only USB2 port that was on the motherboard was not properly connected to
the exterior of the case.  I had to do some rewiring to bring it out for
use.
