I've had pretty good experience with HP PSC. The last one I bought was B&W laser, and it was a few years back. In general, I recommend picking a few printers you like based on features and price, then going to http://www.openprinting.org/printer_list.cgi and confirming that it works with OSS drivers. I avoid proprietary solutions because they may stop working when you upgrade your system.
