I currently use dirvish to do this using rsync and hardlinks, though I
used to use custom scripts. This way I can keep dailies for the last
week, weeklies for the last month, and monthlies for the last year all
without wasting too much in terms of disk space (for my current setup,
it's about 3 times the size of the data I'm backing up with about 10%
churn on a daily basis, but this is probably overkill for most
people).

Tape can still be good for easy media shifting and long term storage,
but it requires administration that the automated rsyncs don't. It's
all a trade-off.
