As an aside, my uottawa account on this list became "non-member" so I've unsubscribed and resubscribed with new email. I'm trying to get a (legal) Windows 7 Pro 32 bit virtual machine running under VirtualBox. It turns out as adjunct at uOttawa, I can get 1 copy of Win7 from DreamSpark. So I've got everything set up with AVG Free, activation etc., but get a failure to check updates ("service not running", even though the services are running). Some postings on Net suggest that the issue is the fake network card in VirtualBox and that there is a way -- possibly inconvenient -- to set up a direct connection to the real network card on the machine. Has anyone experience (or any knowledge) of doing that? I'd like to have an updated Windows box to be able to check software I'm associated with e.g. R or the epub stuff I do. While I'd like to tell folk to "just install Linux", I find it easier to get them hooked on R etc., then show them how to run it better, i.e. under Linux. Cheers, JN
