Who/What are you trying to secure yourself against? A "man-in-the-middle" reading personal information or meta-data? Yourself from installing malicious software? Malicious/proprietary scripts on websites? Do you care about anonymity, and if so, to what degree?

Realistically, I think you have to know what you want to protect yourself from, and make good habits to keep yourself protected. Playing with knobs on your browser and installing addons alone and thinking you're passively secure is certainly "living in a fool's paradise".
