I will sometimes try an update on a VM to see how it goes - virtualbox is
free and works great for setting up a quick test environment.  However, I
have gone through so many broken / bad upgrades that I am quite used to
quickly popping in a live CD, reinstalling grub and then adding in any
missing modules.  Those are pretty much the most common issues. I have to
say though I haven't had to do that in a while, most ubuntu upgrades have
been pretty seamless
