If the mini-penguins are R/O, can you set up a protocol -- assuming you burn the ROM -- to authenticate via an authentication server? Thus all the mini-penguins can be identical.

   actually, the goal is to log into the *little* one remotely -- the
fact that it's connected to a bigger one might be useful but it still
hasn't solved the problem. i'm convinced at this point that as long as
the little one has effectively a R/O filesystem, there's not much i
can do easily.
