I had the same issue when I first got my Rogers access. 2 things may be at fault here. Try Phil's suggestion first. The modem does keep the MAC address internally. If you have more then one PC at home , the modem needs to be powered down and then up to get the new mac from the connected PC. The other issue may be your configuration at your institution. They may have set sone of your IP attributes manually through scripts, getting you IP address from DHCP but hard coded your DNS or default route entries. I know that sounds nuts, but I've seen it happen. -----Original Message----- From: linux-bounces [ at ] lists [ dot ] oclug [ dot ] on [ dot ] ca [mailto:linux-bounces [ at ] lists [ dot ] oclug [ dot ] on [ dot ] ca] On Behalf Of linux-request [ at ] lists [ dot ] oclug [ dot ] on [ dot ] ca Sent: Sunday, November 06, 2005 12:00 PM To: linux [ at ] lists [ dot ] oclug [ dot ] on [ dot ] ca Subject: Linux Digest, Vol 11, Issue 3 Send Linux mailing list submissions to linux [ at ] lists [ dot ] oclug [ dot ] on [ dot ] ca To subscribe or unsubscribe via the World Wide Web, visit http://www.oclug.on.ca/mailman/listinfo/linux or, via email, send a message with subject or body 'help' to linux-request [ at ] lists [ dot ] oclug [ dot ] on [ dot ] ca You can reach the person managing the list at linux-owner [ at ] lists [ dot ] oclug [ dot ] on [ dot ] ca When replying, please edit your Subject line so it is more specific than "Re: Contents of Linux digest..." I recently installed Suse Linux 9.3 on my laptop (it's a Dell make with a pentium 4 & has a ethernet card). It connects to internet at my institute by plugging into their network. However, at home using Rogers cable (Motorola-SB5100 SURFboard cable modem) internet (which is working fine on my windows pc) if I try to hook the laptop to the internet it fails. I tried to set up Automatic Address Setup (via DHCP) using YaST but it didn't work. Upon calling Rogers their support team expressed their inability to provide help for Linux OS. Is there anything specific I need to specify in the settings/configuration? If any of you have experienced similar problem and found some way out then please let me know. Some models lock to the first MAC address that asks for an IP via DHCP, ingoring following requests from other network devices. If this works, you may want to get a router. Good luck! -Phil On 6-Nov-2005 09:55 Sunil Kulkarni wrote: | Hi there! | I recently installed Suse Linux 9.3 on my laptop (it's a Dell make | with a pentium 4 & has a ethernet card). I thought DHCP was enough. When you select DHCP and do a disable/enable cycle from Yast on the interface do you actually get an IP Address? (I have no idea what status info YaST provides, as I've never used it). If the graphical interface doesn't provide such information then looking at the output of "/sbin/ifconfig eth0" from a terminal should show you what your IP address is under "inet addr:". Hopefully others on the list will have better advice to do specifically with Rogers and SUSE. mh -- Martin Hicks || mort [ at ] bork [ dot ] org || PGP/GnuPG: 0x4C7F2BEE ------------------------------ _______________________________________________ Linux mailing list Linux [ at ] lists [ dot ] oclug [ dot ] on [ dot ] ca http://www.oclug.on.ca/mailman/listinfo/linux End of Linux Digest, Vol 11, Issue 3 ************************************
