Actually, Tangerine is really doing this. We were asked to do such
picture, and we verified by calling them directly, and they confirmed,
over two different calls, that such pictures can be required. I agree
with you, I do not like such way to do identity verification. However,
this time, Tangerine cleared a fraud that we were victim of in less than
a month, for an undisclosed amount.

I would show them the ID on webcam if they promise not to record the video.
I can't believe there is no law preventing this cr*p.

Booking.com, who I have used for years, has recently been urging me to "verify" my account. Silly me just assumed that was email and phone numbers used for booking purposes so I started the process. Like you, bailed when it got to the "upload suitable gov ID" request. If it becomes mandatory with them, then lots of other ways to book travel.

I was locked out of my bank (TD) so I had to phone them.
They wanted me to upload a photo ID and something else (I stopped listening after upload) to their "provider".
Or I can go in to a branch (which I'll do).
They didn't know or wouldn't tell me who the "provider" is.
I don't know if it's in Canada or what security they have around it.
I'm not paranoid, I just don't trust them to protect me. :-)
