If I am to put any interpretation onto the meaning of "shift", it would
be that
* to me, implies non-salaried and therefore fixed hours, as relates to
any given shift,
* the total of hours for a shift would depend on the start time during
the day, and
* each shift may not have the same number of hours, where time-of-day
could imply shift-specific premiums.
Having said all that, my sense of expectation is that the *basic shift*
relates to an *actual 8 hours* of work, not including lunch break. With
that scenario, I visualize the following arrangement for round-the-clock
shifts and shift rotation:
* 12:01 am - 7:30 am ( 7 hrs + premium 2)
* 7:30 am - 4:00 pm ( 8 hrs + no premium)
* 4:00 pm - 12:01 am ( 7.5 hrs + premium 1)

* is this daytime, evening, night or weekend?
* is this governmenta, industrial, commercial, retail, financial,
construction, agricultural, etc.?
The other consideration is the motivation for the question:
