Re: Fwd: Canadian Web Hosting

Gabriel: this is awesome! Did you know that there is a list of community-submitted Canadian ISPs forming on Wikipedia? List here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_internet_service_providers_in_Canada

Do you happen to know where one can find a definition of "Canadian Internet Service Provider"?

To get an idea, you can look at Canada's IXPs (Internet Exchange
Points). Full list here:
https://www.cira.ca/en/net-good/network-resilience/ixps/
And then on the respective IXPs webpage, you can look at the members/peers.

If your favourite ISP or cloud provider is not listed, you could
encourage them to be. It's not that expensive I believe and it enables
better local inter-connectivity,

Biggest ISP is, of course, Toronto: https://www.torix.ca/peers/
If you search carefully, you'll notice 1 of the big 4 Canadian ISPs is
not present... 😉

It all depends on the numerous and redundant interconnections between
the hosting service and a Canadian client, again depending on the
network where the client is located. The resilient nature of Internet
means that there are more than one route from point A to point B. The
Linux traceroute command can help in establishing a possible route
between you and hosting provider. Some routes may transit in USA, others
may not.

So I would not use a Canadian-only route a criteria to say that a
hosting provider is Canadian. I would rather ask about the hosting
datacenter location to be in Canada.

That's my opinion.

James,

If they did go through the US (as some do), would you still consider
them a "Canadian Web Host"?

Is the routing up to them or your ISP though?
