Re: Re: July Meeting...

Hi James,

EMRs are "Electronic Medical Records" but this term is used to refer to the electronic systems that primary care professionals and specialists (ex. Nurse Practitioners, Family Physicians, Dermatologists, etc.) use to record your personal health information (ex. blood test results, health conditions, vaccinations, prescriptions, etc.). Dental systems are somewhat different/unique - actually a lot could be improved about both types of systems with quality intersectional work. There are many benefits to EMRs, but one is the ability to leverage digital transcription and scribes. I would love to say "gone are the olden days of illegible writing, medical errors, lack of documentation, lack of accountability, and lack of continuity of care" but it's 2024 and there are still many paper-based clinics.

Hospital Information Systems (HIS) are the comprehensive systems used by hospitals, ex. Meditech, SunnyCare (https://www.canhealth.com/2018/05/01/sunnybrook-creates-its-own-advanced-ehr/). The term "EHR" also gets thrown into the mix, but is really referring to the patient record (Electronic Health Record) and not the system. HIS provide the above stated improvements over paper-based systems and allow the transmission of information between departments and external partners, as well as development and implementation of innovative standards (ex. HL7/FHIR, eCTAS). For example, a Physician might make a note about a patient in an HIS system about a food allergy, and that information would be available to a Dietician as well as food services at the hospital. The HIS also communicates with specialized systems - so in the example of a food allergy, a specialized system might be Computrition, and there would be exchange of information between the HIS and Computrition and access to each system as appropriate (based on protections like the Personal Health Information Protection Act, PHIPA, for example).

Hope that helps,
Katie

What is the difference between an EMR system and a Hospital Information
System?
