using modem-router as router only

I believe I may not have been clear that I want to set up
a TP Link TD9970 (modem router used only as router) behind
Smart/RG staying as modem router. The Smart/RG has 3 wired
slots but wifi turned off. I use wifi and 3 wired slots on
Linksys now, but the Linksys is only rated to 100MBbs.

The issue is whether the modem-router is likely to give
headaches trying to use it as a router only, especially
as it doesn't have (as far as I can determine) a dedicated
ethernet input, unless I can specify one of its 4 slots as
the input.

And the alternative is simply to buy a gigabit router,
