To follow up, it appears that Caja, the file manager for Linux-Mint MATE, may be the culprit here, as Thunar seems to work fine. Nautilus also seems to give the same problems as Caja on my Linux Mint 20 setups (reproduced on 2 machines). I've no idea what is going wrong, and why particularly on my script but not other apps. Maybe some back and forth discussion with one or two other users may reveal what is going on. Since Thunar works, I have a work around, but it would be nice to know the source of this glitch.
