I *had* exactly this:
hosts: files mymachines myhostname mdns_minimal [NOTFOUND=return] dns
Had, the problem has fixed itself with a reboot which sounds to me to be
total nonsense:
- /etc/nsswitch.conf was being reread every time IIRC.
- I neglected to see if it was loading the NSS libs.
- I am not running nscd, it's 2020 and there wasn't any NIS either.
- There is no daemon here. Is some state being cached in some shared
memory somewhere?
- It was the same config on my laptop as dad's.
I am not asking so much how to debug the specific problem, as to how to
a bit more generally figure things out in opaque libraries short of
gdb and hope there are some meaningful symbols.
