ssh login requires identity file?

I've just (re)setup a machine and copied over my keys and set the
permissions. When I try an ssh login to my server

e.g., ssh nashjc [ at ] myserver [ dot ] org

I get permission denied (public key). But

        ssh -i mykey nashjc [ at ] myserver [ dot ] org

works fine. I note that on the client machine I am logged in
as john, but this doesn't seem to be a problem on other machines.

The problem machine is running Bunsenlabs He distro, while the
machine that works is Linux Mint 19.3 Tricia.

Ideas?
