Someone asked me to summarize, so here goes... There were three
suggestions for free DDNS services:
freedns (https://freedns.afraid.org/)
No-IP (https://noip.com/)
opendns (https://info.umbrella.com/)
A constraint that I didn't mention previously is that the DDNS client I
want to use is embedded in a router (which is in turn embedded in my
cable modem), so I'm limited to services supported by that device. The
first two listed above are supported, but the last one is not.
The freedns service looked promising, until I noticed the fatal flaw: to
get the free service, you must agree to share your domain and allow
others to create subdomains from it. That's a definite showstopper. To
eliminate that limitation, you must sign up for a service that costs
$60/year (presumably $US), which is way too steep for the service provided.
The No-IP free offering doesn't work for me either... it turns out that
it only applies if you use one of their domains (e.g.,
yourhostname.no-ip.com). If you bring your own domain, it will cost
$30/year.
There are some other providers supported by my router firmware, so I'm
starting to check them out, but I fear that they all have gotchas of
some sort. Fortunately, I still have a few months before my current DDNS
provider pulls the plug, so I have some time to mull things over.
