  i'll keep track of the responses i get just to pass them on to the
class. regarding rsync, now that i went looking for backup solutions,
i just ran across dirvish:

which is apparently a user-friendly wrapper around rsync:

  http://dirvish.org/docs.html

anyway, i'll keep an ongoing list of suggestions.
