following up on peter meyer's query about routers, i'm fairly sure i
once suggested a (mailing list-based?) OCLUG project where, as a
group, we could select some easily available, commercial wireless
router that was OpenWrt compatible, and document the heck out of it so
that anyone who wanted to set up and use an OpenWrt-based router for
the first time would have detailed instructions on how to get going.

the only requirements for the selected router would be, i figure:

* OpenWrt compatible (as in, buildable and installable right out
  out the box)
* 802.11ac (since that's becoming fairly common for routers, even
if you don't immediately have any ac clients)
* affordable (less than $100 would be nice)
* locally available (as in, off the shelf at canada computers or
  similar)

i already mentioned that, not that long ago, i picked up a tp-link
archer c7 v2 (precisely, v2.3) at canada computers, and ending today,
it's on sale for $80, which is a very decent price:

for that router, openwrt built and installed through the GUI right
on top of the factory firmware, and most of the openwrt gurus i watch
on the mailing lists normally suggest that, if you want to get
started, just buy the best tp-link router you can afford.

anyway, open to suggestions, this just seems like an easy way to
start a project that numerous people can get involved in from the
start.

rday

p.s. cnet's "best 802.11ac routers of 2014", some pretty pricey:

p.p.s. i'm heading to canada computers later today for other reasons,
and if anyone wants one of those tp-link routers and will be at the
meeting later this week to pick it up, i can buy one for you and bring
it to the meeting. just let me know by mid-day today.
