Clone the drive with GNU ddrescue - never perform work on the
questionable drive. Always work on the new cloned drive. Even the act
of testing a drive and reporting errors often endangers data more than
immediately cloning it. Every time you power up a damaged drive the
chance it will lose more data increases. There is lots of good info out
there on ddrescue.

If there is anything really critical on the drive, take it to Tunstall &
Tunstall (Prince of Wales at Colonnade Rd in Nepean) and pay the pros to
get your data. They have replacement controller boards, firmware and
proper read only cloning tools that will not compromise a damaged drive
while getting the data off.
