Thanks for your advice Bruce.
Based on it I decided to download and use Madwifi
whereupon I discovered that Madwifi was already installed on Ubuntu 7.10.
Nevertheless, somehow the act of reinstalling it fixed the problem I had so
that
now my wireless works fine.

All's well that ends well I guess.
