UW IMAPD does not support Maildir.

Dovecot does support Maildir. I recomend Dovecot. It is a snap to
setup, and is generally faster then my previous Courier install.

Procmail does support maildir. I think you add a / to the end of
mailbox names. man procmail for details.

Some ISPs also relay for authenticated users from anywhere and support
SSL/TLS. 


While I like my fetchmail + MTA + filters + IMAP + mutt + msmtp combo
it is not for everyone. Mutt users should check out msmtp if they have
secondary accounts (gmail) that they would like to use.
