Re: Soliciting topics for April Meeting

Hi Scott,

I think I have a topic that might interest a few, if not many, of those on the distribution list.

*Could someone outline, in detail, the steps* that would be required for a desktop Linux user (as Root, or just default User) to perform an *autoinstall* <https://canonical-subiquity.readthedocs-hosted.com/en/latest/reference/autoinstall-reference.html>

 * from a running desktop Host OS ...
 * onto an internal virgin hard disk ...

while having "online" (meaning local) access to a Live ISO image of the desired OS.

The intent here is to attempt to ensure my personal "business continuity" from a chaotic situation facing UbuntuMATE.

My concept of the process is to

 * run a script to pre-format the disk to my preferred, very custom,
   layout ...

 * install Ubuntu Server as bare bones, no "extraneous services" image ...

 * install MATE Desktop and required elements to "reconstitute"
   equivalence to UbuntuMATE (less application packages) ...

 * run a custom script to offer checkbox selection of desired
   Application suite to be installed, per user preferences ... OR ...
   install specified list of Application packages.

Trying to muddle my way through all that, I've already touched on various aspects of that subject (including some scripts) in different discussions within the UbuntuMATE Discourse Community,

 * Specifying and Installing Minimalist UbuntuMATE

 * Downloading ISO Build related files - Handy Script

 * Any way to create a file and make it emulate a real block device?

 * Auto-rebuild of Brisk Menu after Application Install

 * YAD not working for HTML

 * Looking for some comments/feedback - Application Install Selection Tool

 * Dd - Why message suggesting flag ... when flag is already present?
   <https://ubuntu-mate.community/t/dd-why-message-suggesting-flag-when-flag-is-already-present/31102>

but ...

 * I am a retired senior ...
 * I have only one computer ...
 * I would prefer not to have to try to figure out the complexities
   involved.

In this case, I would really like to use a "verified recipe" ... if that is possible.

I figured that if such a topic would be covered, it would attract a reasonably large audience *for the various different Desktop Managers*, since the process should be DM-portable.

Other possible topics, but to be presented *by others*, if interested:

 * PROJECT - Shared Community Tool - Directory Comparison and file

 * Basic topic of visualizing APT Packaging dependencies
   <https://ubuntu-mate.community/t/graphite-apt-package-dependency-visualization-tool/30633>

and then there is this one anoying issue I have, possibly because my computer hardware is too old:

 * Setting up for workable ACPI Suspend or Hibernate

 * Suspend, Hibernate or Hybrid of Both - How to tell current
   configuration?

I think that is enough for one submission!  🙂

I'm asking the community at large if anyone has a topic. The usual suspects are dry this month and I was away for a couple of weeks and lost track of time, so I don't have anything remotely ready to talk about.

For now I'll call it an open session and call for volunteers to speak or ask questions on Thursday. If anyone want to volunteer a session, you have the floor.

Cheers,
Scott
