Personally speaking, the "travels through US" isn't really relevant, as:
a) traffic ought to be encrypted en route
b) traffic from here (Vancouver) to Ottawa, etc. is virtually always
going through the US.
That is, it's nigh impossible to have your VPS accessible to all of
Canada without US transit.
Sadly.
We need redundant trans-continental fibre lines, with branches to all
the major urban centres, further feeding municipal FTTH providers
nation-wide.
