Let's start with "what's your threat model?".

Given the membership of what was OCLUG, how do we vet members?  Do we
even want to, because then it is no longer an open community group.

We may want authentication, but I don't think this group needs
encryption for regular club business.

Not having a smart mobile device, none of these seem remotely useful or
interesting to me.
