Yes samba installed. And if it had not been installed, why would things work with the wifi dongle. Also it works fine with a USB-ethernet dongle that gives wired access. I'm beginning to think that there is some sort of hardware issue. About a dozen years ago we bought a laptop and after about a month found that CD writes were unreliable. After a lot of futzing around, I was able to show a flakey DMA circuit with enough output to convince the supplier to replace the machine, though it had been a few months before I had everything documented, since the machine worked fine on just about everything else. The worst bit was that it burned coasters but seemed to be "almost" there. In this present case, I'd like to know what is going on, but unless it affects other stuff may well stick to the usb-ethernet as the work involved in getting machine fixed is probably not worth the costs. However, knowing what is wrong with a new $2K investment is important to me. And I'll write up the case to help others (there's already quite a file of the setup). So suggestions of how to dig into the ethernet hardware and software are welcome. I'm anticipating quite a bit of work, and will have to find times my wife is not using the machine. For the record, I've booted in live-usb and get same issues. I thought it might be software corruption. And I've some records of what I've tried, but plan to take a block of time to rerun a bunch of diagnostics. Suggestions of tools are welcome.
