any suggestions for *simple* load balancing on linux?

friend is looking for a lightweight solution for load balancing on a
cluster of linux boxes -- just the ability to monitor load on other
systems, and ship jobs to run on quiet systems, or possibly hold off
until the load drops below a configured level.

  he was checking out slurm:

https://www.schedmd.com/

but thought it was simply too heavy and complicated. anyone out there
actually using something simple?
