Getting correct timing for transfer to USB

In Walmart Kanata today found 32 GB USB3 flash drives for $7.95. That's a quarter
a GB, so I picked up a couple. Seem to be a Walmart house brand (Blackweb).

Curious about timing of USB3, I wrote a little script to copy a large file (an iso
for my dancebox distro of 972 MB) and then read it. But of course the buffering
made the read back REALLY fast. Looking around on web, I've been using

sync; echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches

to clear buffers, but the command only works as root.

Somehow, I'm sure there's a better way to time the

  HD --> USB

and

  USB --> HD

operations properly.

Not a critical task, but I thought I'd compare a few devices, and possibly
different formattings of those devices. Actually talked about this several
OCLUG meetings ago, but didn't get round to it until today.
