I believe I have resolved this problem.I was connecting to my ISP using authentication, but without starttls. Trouble is, the version of nullmailer in ubuntu 12.04 did not support starttls.
But with some help I found a backport of nullmailer for 12.04, installed it and starttls now works fine.
