Re: [OCLUG-Tech] Use of libreoffice to do high school work

Hi John

I do not know about policy that the school board has in place now. But when I took a course at Ottawa U I was expected to hand in every thing in Office format. When I signed up for the course I read the course  promoted Open source.  I was not happy buying MS Office just to do home work. I have moral issues with promoting a course as open source then saying we will not mark open office Docs.

Subject: [OCLUG-Tech] Use of libreoffice to do high school work

My son is using Ubuntu and libreoffice to write school assignments.

Unfortunately, he is running into a couple of bugs, such as this one:

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=50286

When documents are saved as .doc and then opened with Word the formatting
is frequently messed up.    The libreoffice guys are doing a great job
trying to deal with issues such as this, but it is a very tough battle to
get things  just right.

His teachers insist on assignments being handed in in .doc format.
Further, at least one of them will not even listen to his explanations of
why formatting is messed up and won't look at the hard copy he has for them
which has everything just fine.   The end result is that he is getting
marks deducted for using libreoffice.

I took a look at the school website and the Ottawa Carleton School Board
site and cannot find any information on policies for school assignments.

I am going to be writing to the principal at the school to explain the
situation and hoping to get some understanding there.

Meanwhile, I am wondering if anyone on the list here is aware of what the
policies at Ottawa schools actually are and if anyone has previously
brought this issue up with the school board.
