I would use rsync. rather then ftp. It is more ment for backups then ftp or sftp. It incremental backup protocol. My solution was to use OpenVPN with X.509 certificates coupled with FTP and a .netrc script. OpenVPN is supported on all of the platforms that you mentioned.
