[OCLUG-Tech] Re: shared web hosting

OCLUG members may find this useful if they need a smallish web site (10-40MB).

Having been with Magma for better part of a decade, and recently finding the service with Primus who took them over to be less than stellar, I sought other options. Since 2003 have had at least one domain name with cadns.ca and found service good, and added another last year and moved nashinfo.com this year (from Network Solutions set up back in 1996). The cadns web page is a bit busy, and I found I needed to ask about Linux shared web hosting, which they do indeed offer at about $130 / year for the package which will suit us for now. Has emails, a web-based panel for control; simple ftp to upload files, some CGI scripting. (Uses
apache 1.3.29
mysql 3.23.58
php 4.3.4 )

Bit dated, but fine for what we need.

The transfer went VERY smoothly, in part I think due to the cadns service. For info, they and servers are located in Oshawa and are a company called Beck Web Services. I don't think I do anything even vaguely suspect (except run Linux, of course!), but prefer to have my info outside of the jurisdiction of the US Patriot Act.

In my research, I also came across Cirrus Web Hosting in Toronto. Similar offering, and when I called I got a real person! Amazing. However, since Beck/cadns had the domains and did the dns setup for me (no charge), as well as my past experiences with them, it was a no-brainer.
