So, I'm using an old tdfx chipset (3dfx voodoo3), and if I use this config I
manage to get up to 1600x1200, although it doesn't look very good. I think it
drops colour depth for one thing. 

How can I confirm the colour depth that X is running as?

Also, more oddness. startx brings up my session but gdm puts the monitor into
an unsupported mode. How can one work but the other not?

Colour me confused...at 24 or 16 bits I'm not sure.
