I will second a previous responder's suggestion that you pick the brains of Ian! D. Allen. But you are in Lethbridge, Ian is in Ottawa and we ain't lettin' go of him :-). A classic book, also by a teacher of introductory Linux is Paul Sheer's LINUX: Rute User's Tutorial and Exposition.: http://www.amazon.com/LINUX-Tutorial-Exposition-Prentice-Technology/dp/0130333514/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1202961308&sr=8-1 This book was, and may still be available for free (as in beer) download in PDF form. My electronic copy is probably in backups, but I can find it if you cannot. Definitely available for download (and, to my knowledge, has never appeared in dead tree form) is the Advanced Bash Scripting Guide at the Linux Documentation Project (http://tldp.org/guides.html). I have found it a valuable reference. The latest revision is November 2007.
