I've had good luck with flatbed scanners in Linux - Plustek 9636T (parallel -- S L O w) - Canon Canoscan LIDE 60- Samsung 2451 multi-function printer/fax/scanner (see earlier posts re: Linux driver)
I also have a Plustek Opticfilm 7200 for film/slides. This has only Windows drivers unfortunately (as far as I know). I'd be happy to be disabused of this opinion, of course.
